FOR PRACTICE OWNERS & VETERINARIANS
A study by Setter and co-workers (2018) indicated that the veterinary nursing co-hort has a
"Strong reliance on work culture for biosecurity information".[6]
Responsibilities as a practice owner and/or veterinarian :
-
Eliminate or minimise WH&S risks (such as Q fever exposure), including providing appropriate instruction and training of all workers - this is necessary under Australian law
-
Failure to provide this can result in legal action
-
WH&S efforts you can make:
-
Recommend Q fever vaccination to all veterinary personnel
-
The same above study indicated that only 35% of veterinarians were willing to recommend Q fever vaccination to veterinary personnel!
-
make vaccination an Employee Requirement
Practice owners have an obligation to protect the welfare of their employees, not just their animal patients. Requiring employees to be vaccinated against Q fever ensures they are protected against potential exposure.

Go an extra step and Subsidise vaccination costs.
This can done by paying for the entire vaccination cost, some of it or directing part of the employee's very first pay check towards it.
